Qualitative vs Quantitive Research
My first approach to understanding qualitative and quantitative research was to use Google and numerous ".org" websites to try to grasp the concepts in simpler terms. Then I ventured over to ole reliable...ChatGPT to help organize my findings a bit more, and here's what I found.
Quantitative research is about numbers. It asks things like how many, how much, what’s the relationship between variables. It relies on structured tools (surveys, controlled experiments, statistical tests) and aims for objectivity, replicability, and generalizability. PMC+3Simply Psychology+3SAGE Journals+3
Qualitative research is about meaning. It asks why, how, what’s going on beneath the surface. It uses methods like interviews, focus groups, observations, texts, or field notes to dig into experiences, perspectives, context, and nuance. ResearchGate+4Simply Psychology+4National University+4
One helpful way I think about it is that quantitative provides the map (how many, where trends are), while qualitative gives you the story (why things look as they do, what the terrain is like). I found that many find a way to blend the methods depending on what they're studying.
Some key differences:
| Feature | Quantitative | Qualitative |
|---|---|---|
| Question type | “How many? To what extent? What’s the correlation?” | “Why? How do participants experience this?” |
| Data | Structured (surveys, tests, counts) | Unstructured (interviews, field notes, observations) |
| Analysis | Statistical tests, regression, modeling | Thematic coding, narrative analysis, grounded theory |
| Sample | Larger, often randomized or representative | Smaller, purposive or convenience sampling |
| Strengths | Precision, generalizability, objectivity | Depth, context sensitivity, participant voice |
| Limitations | Can miss nuance or context; risk oversimplifying | Harder to generalize; more labor-intensive; subjective interpretations |

THe image is hilarious. I love the idea that one of the differences here is the "map" vs the "story" Sounds like you have a good sense of how these methods might inform your work!
ReplyDeleteBut wait why am I dying laughing... This actually made my day I love this so glad I came to your blog this is really a great way of viewing the two
ReplyDeleteI am so happy to have ventured onto your blog exactly when I did (so that this photo was what welcomed me lmaoooo)! I also appreciated how you described quantitative data as the map and qualitative data as the story, the distinctions you made existent between the two, and even the source you linked. Last but certainly not least, I think it is so cool that you are feeling like more of a quantitative girly (as I am feeling like more of a qualitative girly lolol) and ya, I am just really excited to see where you go with your capstone project.
